Currently, the production of paper, cardboard, and corrugated cardboard packaging is on the rise because these materials are among the most economical and environmentally friendly. Today, with the active development of branding and attention being paid not only to the quality of goods but also to the quality of packaging, its design, and environmental friendliness, the demand for high-quality consumer and transport packaging among manufacturers is constantly growing. The uniqueness and importance of this segment of the packaging industry also lies in the wide range of applications for these materials.

Companies operating in the packaging market are seeing an increase in demand for paper and cardboard packaging.

The most widely used are 2-, 3-, and 5-layer corrugated cardboard, used for the production of transport packaging, and micro-corrugated cardboard for consumer packaging.

The history of corrugated cardboard

Corrugated cardboard packaging has become such a big part of our lives that it seems like it has always been around. However, corrugated cardboard has only been used for packaging for a little over a hundred years. The idea of using corrugated cardboard for packaging was proposed in 1871 by Albert Johnson of New York. This decision was more of a necessity than a spontaneous idea, as there was a need to protect goods (especially glass containers) from all kinds of mechanical impacts. The first patent for the use of corrugated cardboard as packaging was registered in December 1871. Ten years passed, and in 1881, the first mechanically driven machine appeared, which not only produced corrugated cardboard but also wound it into rolls.

Initially, equipment for the production of corrugated cardboard was manufactured in small workshops, and later this production was taken over by machine-building enterprises of various companies. In the 20th century, the production of corrugated cardboard spread throughout the world.

Initially, the width of corrugated cardboard was 660 mm, later increasing to 850-1000 mm. Cardboard boxes became smaller and it was no longer necessary to use labor-intensive machines. Slits were made using disc saws.

As corrugated cardboard and packaging improved, so did the corrugating machines. The result of this improvement was the creation of a corrugating machine that included all processes: from unwinding rolls of paper and cardboard to obtaining two-layer corrugated cardboard in rolls and 3, 5, 7 layers in sheets. The corrugating speed also increased. In 1905, the corrugating speed was 3 m/min, in 1920 it was already 20-25 meters, and in 1930 the corrugating speed reached 100 meters per minute. The corrugating speed on modern machines reaches 200 meters per minute. Corrugated cardboard is rightly considered today to be the most advantageous material for packaging. Corrugated packaging is also one of the most environmentally friendly types of packaging in the world.
